The cost of moving to Dubai
Beyond rent, the act of moving has its own price tag — shipping, visas, deposits and setting up a home. Here's a realistic budget for the move itself.
There are two separate budgets when relocating: the cost of *moving* (this guide) and the cost of *living* in your first year (see Dubai first-year cost). Here's what the move itself runs to.
Getting your stuff here
| Option | Indicative cost |
|---|---|
| Suitcases only / buy fresh | AED 0–10,000 |
| Part shipment (boxes, sea freight) | AED 8,000–25,000 |
| Full household container (sea, from UK/Europe) | AED 25,000–70,000+ |
| Air freight (fast, expensive) | Premium over sea — use sparingly |
Depends on origin, volume and air vs sea. Get 2–3 quotes and check what's included (packing, insurance, customs, delivery).
Furniture is cheap and plentiful in Dubai, and many rentals can be furnished. For many movers, shipping only sentimental and hard-to-replace items beats a full container.
Visa, medical & ID
- Employment visa & medical — often employer-paid for you; budget for dependants (visa, medical, Emirates ID per person).
- Emirates ID — per person, modest fee.
- Document attestation — degree, marriage, birth certificates (do this *before* you leave — it's slower and pricier from inside the UAE).
- Health insurance for dependants — mandatory; employer usually covers only the employee.
Setting up the home & life
- The move-in stack — agent commission, deposit, Ejari, DEWA deposit — see first-year cost.
- Furniture & white goods if unfurnished (AED 10,000–60,000+).
- School registration & deposits for families — see school fees by area.
- Car — purchase/lease deposit, or set up Metro/Careem.
- Temporary accommodation for your first few weeks while you find a home.
Keep moving costs and first-year living costs separate so neither surprises you. The cost calculator models the living side; get 2–3 mover quotes for the moving side.
